Soccer Heat Map Analysis Explained

A heat map shows up in any professional football broadcast and seems to say a lot at a glance. The problem is that, without understanding how it's generated, it's very easy to draw the wrong conclusions from an image that is actually fairly limited.

What a soccer heat map actually shows

A heat map is a visual representation of the zones of the pitch where a player or team spent the most time or had the most ball contacts during a match, usually coloured from blue (low presence) to red (high presence).

How it's generated: GPS, cameras, tracking

At the professional level, heat maps are generated from camera-based tracking systems or GPS chips that record a player's position several times per second throughout the match. That level of precision requires infrastructure that virtually no grassroots or amateur club has available.

How to read it: hot zones vs. cold zones

A "hot" zone indicates frequent presence, not necessarily effectiveness. A centre-back with a heat map tightly concentrated in their own box isn't necessarily better or worse than one with more spread — it depends on the playing system, not just the map.

What heat maps don't tell you

A heat map doesn't distinguish between presence with the ball and without it, doesn't say whether that presence was effective, and doesn't capture the quality of decisions made in each zone. It's a snapshot of where a player has been, not of how they played.

Approximating this analysis without GPS

Without positioning sensors, the realistic alternative for a grassroots club is to work by game model zones instead of exact coordinates: logging which zone of the pitch turnovers, recoveries or scoring chances happen in already gives you a useful zonal reading, without needing a professional club's infrastructure.
