How to Create a Soccer Training Plan

Mario Fernández Osorio23 June 20257 min

Many coaches build tomorrow's session by thinking about drills first: "what should we do today?" The result is usually an entertaining session disconnected from any real season-long objective.

Before you plan: context, goals, player level

Before picking a single drill, you need to answer three questions: which phase or behaviour of the game model you want to work on, where you are in the microcycle (day after the match, day before the next one), and what level and availability the group has on that specific day.

Session structure: warm-up, core, cool-down

A well-structured session has three blocks: activation (10 to 15 minutes, related to the day's objective), core block (the bulk of the time, with drills that directly target the chosen objective) and cool-down (brief, with a verbal review of what was worked on). Skipping specific activation or improvising the core block are the two most common mistakes.

Distributing content across the weekly microcycle

Not every day of the week allows the same intensity or the same type of content. Days closer to the previous match allow higher volume and tactical complexity; days closer to the next match should prioritise high intensity with low volume, leaving real rest for competition.

Common planning mistakes

The most frequent ones: repeating the same session structure all season, keeping no written record of what was worked on, and designing the session in isolation from the rest of the microcycle, without checking what was trained the day before or what comes next.

Template and app to plan faster

A reusable session template — with the three blocks already defined — saves real time every week. If that template is generated by an AI practice planner from a tactical objective, the whole process drops from thirty minutes to under one.
