Individual Development Plan (IDP) for Soccer Players

The concept of an Individual Development Plan (IDP) is common in professional academies, but almost unknown in grassroots and amateur football. The good news is that it doesn't require professional infrastructure — it requires method.

What an Individual Development Plan (IDP) is

An IDP is a living document that defines, for a specific player, what they need to improve, what concrete actions will be taken, and how progress will be measured. It is not a one-off evaluation — it is an ongoing process that follows the player across a season or several.

How to build an IDP step by step

The process starts with an initial evaluation of the player across technical, tactical, physical and attitudinal areas. From there, you select two or three concrete, prioritised objectives — not ten — define the training actions tied to each objective, and set a review date.

Setting goals, tracking progress, reviewing

IDP goals must be observable: not "improve passing," but "reduce failed passes when playing out under pressure." Tracking relies on what you already record every week — minutes, attendance, one-off evaluations — and review should happen at least quarterly, adjusting goals as needed.

A sample IDP in practice

A 15-year-old centre-back with strong aerial ability but a weak build-up game might have these goals: improve the first touch when receiving under pressure with their back to goal, and reduce long clearance passes by relieving pressure with a safe short pass instead. Every training session would include at least one drill directly targeting one of those two points.

How NeoTactIQ automates the process

NeoTactIQ's Player Development sub-module automatically connects each player's minutes, attendance and periodic evaluations in one panel, so the IDP stops living in a separate notebook and instead builds itself from real activity already recorded on the platform.
